It is no secret that there are a number of teams clamoring to get in position to select one of the many quality quarterback prospects in the 2018 NFL Draft. Fortunately, the Los Angeles Chargers do not have any concerns about their stability under center with quarterback Philip Rivers.

Although Rivers has been one of the best quarterbacks in the league over the last decade, today's NFL landscape requires teams to always look ahead to the future. According to Hayley Elwood of the team website, general manager Tom Telesco has not ruled out potentially taking a quarterback in this year's draft:

“The great thing right now is that we’re very happy with Philip,” Telesco said. “He’s our quarterback, hands down, rest assured, for this year and hopefully beyond. But we always have to have an eye on the future. That’s part of our job. There are a lot of other areas on our football team that we’d like to add to, too. That’s all part of it.

“I will say it’s a deep [quarterback] class, not only in the first round but some other rounds as well. We’ve seen it the last couple of years, the quarterback classes have been pretty good. Guys are coming into the league and playing a little bit quicker than they used to. But I have a hard time comparing.”

It goes without saying that Rivers has been a staple in the Chargers offense since the 2006 NFL season. He continues to be one of the most productive quarterbacks in the league going into his 15th season. However, at age 36, Los Angeles will need to start their search for his potential successor.

The Chargers currently own the 17th overall pick in the draft. This likely means the bevy of top quarterback prospects will be out of reach. One player that has slipped in the mock drafts is Louisville's, Lamar Jackson. Despite being one of the most electrifying players in college football, questions about his accuracy have raised questions as to whether or not his game translates to the next level. Regardless, Los Angeles has some flexibility to take a chance on a potential steal in the later rounds.
