The Los Angeles Chargers have opted to place the franchise tag on tight end Hunter Henry. It appears his salary for the 2020 NFL season will be the envy of other players at his position.

NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport confirms that the tag will make Henry the highest-paid tight end in the league for the time being:

“As far as the number, it's $11 million. So right now, I do believe that Hunter Henry is the highest-paid tight end in the NFL.”

The franchise tag amounts to an average of the top salaries at the position. While the number could very well change with the new CBA and looming extensions this offseason, it is safe to say that this is quite the payday for Henry.

Although Henry is certainly one of the most talented tight ends in the NFL, he still has yet to stack up with the elites such as George Kittle, Travis Kelce, and Zach Ertz. Regardless, it is indicative of how confident the Chargers are in his potential that they are hoping to buy some extra time in order to get a deal done.

The market for tight ends has clearly skyrocketed thanks to the efforts of the aforementioned names. Henry's skill set as a bonafide option in the passing game makes him an integral part of their plans to kick off the 2020 campaign at SoFi stadium in style. Of course, it remains to be seen whether or not he will be healthy enough to provide the Chargers with any bang for their buck.
