It has been a long path toward recovery for former Pro Bowl cornerback Jason Verrett after missing the entire 2017 NFL season due to knee surgery. He has continued to make progress in his rehab from the injury over the last several months that has him on pace to be back on the field for the upcoming campaign.

According to Eric D. Williams of ESPN, the 26-year-old has yet to be fully cleared to participate in practice from his knee surgery.

As you mention, starters Trevor Williams and Casey Hayward are back, along with slot defender Desmond King. Jason Verrett has not been cleared to practice fully as he works his way back from knee surgery, but will be out there competing soon.

Although Verrett has yet to receive medical clearance, the fact that he is close to making a return is certainly an encouraging sign. Prior to his injury, he had made strides to becoming one of the top young cornerbacks in the league that earned him a Pro Bowl selection in the 2015 campaign. The only setback for him has been the injury bug that has prevented him from being able to fulfill his potential.

If Verrett is able to prove that he is finally healthy, it should put him in line to start alongside rising star cornerback Casey Hayward, who is coming off a breakout campaign where he proved to be one of the best coverage defensive backs in the league. The two could provide the Chargers secondary with even more stability while offering them one of the top tandems in the NFL next season.

This will also move Trevor Williams and Desmond King to compete for the slot position behind them next season that would give them an even more formidable secondary group. Above all else, this continued progress from Verrett should see him back on the field at some point in the near future.
