The Los Angeles Chargers were dealt quite a blow with the season-ending injury to tight end Hunter Henry on the first day of minicamp. They have now suffered another key loss on the first day of training camp.

Cornerback Jason Verrett reportedly went down during a conditioning test. According to ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter, the Chargers' worst fears were confirmed after being ruled out for the entire 2018 NFL season with a torn Achilles:

“Tests confirmed that Chargers’ CB Jason Verrett officially tore his Achilles, per source. Done for the season.”

It goes without saying that the Chargers have dealt with their fair share of severe injuries to key players. Verrett's diagnosis is just the latest example of their recent string of bad luck.

The former 25th overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft had once established himself as one of the most promising, young cornerbacks in the entire league. He was even selected as an alternate for the Pro Bowl after a stellar 2015 campaign.

Unfortunately, his career has since taken a turn for the worst after having appeared in just five games in what will be three seasons.

There has been plenty of hype surrounding the Chargers this season. Verrett and cornerback Casey Heyward were poised to be one of the most talented duos in the league. However, it appears the Chargers will have to rely heavily on their depth once again.

They will look to cornerbacks Desmond King and Trevor Williams to help fill the void left by Verrett.
