After playing his college ball at the University of Oregon, Justin Herbert was drafted sixth overall in the 2020 NFL Draft by the Los Angeles Chargers. Though 31-year-old veteran Tyrod Taylor started the Chargers’ first game in Week 1, Herbert quickly took the starting job in Week 2 and hasn’t looked back.

According to Fernando Ramirez of Sports Illustrated, Herbert has more belief in himself after starting four games for the team and having the best game of his career in Week 4 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers:

“I feel like I belong out here,” Herbert told Ramirez. “The wins will come if we continue to work hard,” Herbert continued. Furthermore, Herbert has faith that the team will put it together soon.

This statement comes hot on the heels of Chargers head coach Anthony Lynn stating that Herbert will be the starting QB for the rest of the season.

Indeed, the Chargers are currently last in the AFC West, despite winning their first game with Taylor at the helm – the Chargers took down the rookie QB-helmed Cincinnati Bengals in Week 1 by a final score of 16-13.

In Week 4 against the aforementioned Bucs, Herbert had his best game as a pro by putting up 290 yards on 20-of-25 passing with three touchdowns and only one interception. That game was his most efficient showing so far in his young career (80 percent completion percentage), and he also notched a career-high in touchdowns with those three.

Herbert’s yards per pass attempt of 11.60 was the highest so far this season, as was his beefy 137.9 QB rating, which was his best by over 43 points.

Perhaps the Chargers QB is right — the wins will come if he and the team continue to work hard.
