Shortly after the Los Angeles Chargers took former Clemson wide receiver Mike Williams with the seventh overall pick in this year's draft, he suffered a herniated disc that put his rookie season in question.

However, Ian Rapoport of NFL.com is reporting that the Chargers are aiming for Williams to make his return in October.

That's why, according to several sources with direct knowledge of the situation, the plan is for Williams to play in October. How it happens will depend on what unfolds over the next three weeks until it's time to make a roster decision on Sept. 2.

The 22-year-old is making progress in his recovery, as he participated in on-field workouts last week for the first time since he initially suffered the back injury. The Chargers have elected for him to utilize rest and rehab rather than undergoing surgery to repair the ailment.

Los Angeles also has a strong belief that Williams may be able to return to the practice at some point in September, barring any setbacks. This would put him on pace to possibly just miss the first month of the season.

The Chargers have a high expectations set forth for Williams to step in a major role in the passing game in his rookie campaign. He was widely regarded as arguably the top wide receiver in this year's class after a highly productive junior season at Clemson, where he recorded 98 catches for 1,361 receiving yards and 11 touchdowns.
