Cam Newton was released by the Carolina Panthers earlier this week and it remains to be seen where he plays in 2020. While he continues to rehab his foot injury, the Los Angeles Chargers are the betting favorites to sign Newton this offseason.

Following the conclusion of the 2019 season, the Chargers decided to move on from Philip Rivers. With Rivers headed to the Indianapolis Colts, Tyrod Taylor is the current starter on the roster.

For months, it has been assumed that Los Angeles is going to draft a quarterback with the No. 6 pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. However, head coach Anthony Lynn expressed confidence in Taylor. Plus, the Chargers likely didn't know they would have a chance to sign Newton in free agency.

The Panthers chose to release Newton after they finalized a multi-year deal with Teddy Bridgewater. Also, it's important to note that with a new coaching staff in place, Carolina believed it was best to part ways.

Over the past two seasons, injuries have plagued the former MVP, causing him to miss 16 games. Most recently, Newton underwent surgery on his foot after discovering that he had a Lisfranc injury in 2019.

Nevertheless, Newton is still 30 years old and can be an ideal fit in the Chargers offense if he's healthy. At the same time, he would likely come at a discount due to how this offseason has played out.

Regardless of his recent injury history, there should be a handful of teams clamoring to sign Newton for next season. Of the teams that make the most sense, it's hard to argue that Newton wouldn't be a low-risk, high-reward option for the Chargers.
