The Los Angeles Chargers have had quite the NFL offseason. Los Angeles brought back a star on offense by re-signing wide receiver Mike Williams, then looked outside the organization to bring in two Pro Bowl-level talents in Khalil Mack and J.C. Jackson. However, besides the upcoming NFL Draft, one key task remains for the Chargers this offseason. The franchise must agree to terms on a new contract extension with star safety Derwin James. The extension talks with James received a positive update from the Chargers on Friday, as reported by Tyler Dragon of USA Today and Pro Football Talk.

Tyler Dragon of USA Today reports that James and the Chargers are “cautiously optimistic” about coming to terms on an extension before the start of the regular season.

Per Dragon, the Chargers are “cautiously optimistic” about their chances of an agreement on an extension with James. The 25-year-old has made two Pro Bowls and has earned All-Pro honors since entering the league back in 2018.

James has missed time due to injuries twice in his career. His ability to stay on the field could be a potential snag in contract extension talks, though the Chargers have expressed desire to “build around” James, which bodes well for the chances of the two sides getting a deal done.

The eyes of every Chargers fan will be on James and the franchise as they continue to negotiate with the talented young safety.
