According to a report on Sunday from NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport, the Los Angeles Chargers are signing star cornerback Casey Hayward to a three-year contract extension that is said to be worth $36 million.

“The Chargers are signing standout CB Casey Hayward to a 3-year extension, source said, worth $36M. He gets $20M fully guaranteed at signing. LA taking care of its own well-deserved former free agent signing,” Rapoport said.

The 28-year-old Hayward, who made the Pro Bowl the last two years in his first couple seasons with the Chargers, originally signed a three-year deal during the 2016 offseason after he spent his first four seasons with the Green Bay Packers.

Hayward took to Twitter on Sunday to react to his contract extension and expressed a lot of excitement for what the future has in store with the Chargers.

“Got to thank the Chargers and the Spanos family for everything as well. Believing in a guy everybody said was a NICKEL guy and giving him a chance to flourish outside. 3 more years and counting. Let’s push for that ring,” Hayward tweeted.

During the 2016 season when the Chargers were back in San Diego, Hayward led the entire NFL in interceptions with seven picks for 102 yards and one touchdown, 20 pass deflections, and 58 total tackles. Hayward's numbers went down just a little bit last season, but he was still one of the league's elite cornerbacks with four interceptions, 22 pass deflections, and 40 tackles on defense.

It will be very interesting to see what Los Angeles does when the free agency period officially begins on March 14, with the Chargers looking to improve on their 9-7 season despite a 0-4 start.
