The Los Angeles Chargers made sure to secure an integral piece of their offense in running back Austin Ekeler. It appears they have opted to make this a point of emphasis this offseason. According to NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport, the Chargers have reportedly used the franchise tag on tight end Hunter Henry for the 2020 NFL season:

Sources: The Chargers have franchise tagged TE Hunter Henry, keeping a key playmaker in the fold for another year.

The Chargers are set to usher in a new era at SoFi Stadium for the 2020 campaign. As a result, they have seemingly prioritized revamping their offense. Fortunately, they have now managed to shore up two key members of the passing game for whichever quarterback takes Phillip Rivers' place.

Henry was initially brought in as the successor to future Hall of Fame tight end Antonio Gates. He has managed to fit the billing as a viable pass-catcher. And his promise as a top-tier tight end clearly has Los Angeles intrigued by his potential.

Unfortunately, Henry has struggled to stay healthy throughout his career. He already boasts a long track record with injuries. Those injuries have forced him to a miss a total of 26 games in four seasons. As a result, there are understandably concerns about his durability and whether or not he will be available enough to give the Chargers any bang for their buck.

Regardless, the franchise tag will give Los Angeles an extra year to better gauge the market with a number of elite tight ends set to receive a lucrative payday.
