The Los Angeles Chargers have had a disappointing start to the season, which could prompt them to part ways with one of their offensive weapons. According to Ian Rapoport, Melvin Gordon could be traded at the NFL trade deadline.

The NFL trade deadline will take place on Tuesday and Gordon's name has been floating around in rumors.

During training camp and the preseason, Gordon decided to holdout in hopes he could land a long-term extension. The front office exclaimed that they weren't interested in discussing a new deal until after the 2019 season concluded.

As a result, the team's featured running back requested that the Chargers trade him if they didn't want him beyond the 2019 season. Instead of trading him, Gordon returned to the team after Los Angeles' loss to the Houston Texans.

While Gordon was away from the team, Austin Ekeler and Justin Jackson did a remarkable job replacing Gordon's production. In the four games that he started in, Ekeler led the offense with 490 yards from scrimmage and six touchdowns.

The offense looked dynamic with Ekeler alongside him in the backfield but that changed when Gordon was made the starter. Since becoming the starter again in Week 5, Gordon has rushed for just 81 yards on 36 attempts (2.25 yards per attempt).

Along with those abysmal rushing numbers, he's only caught nine passes for 34 yards and a touchdown. Due to his ineffectiveness in the offense, he's quickly become an expendable option at the trade deadline. Additionally, Gordon is in the final year of his current contract.

Therefore, if Los Angeles has no intention of retaining him after this season, they may as well rid of him. The Chargers' front office didn't appease to his trade request during his holdout, but they could grant his request midway through the season.
