Los Angeles Chargers running back Melvin Gordon said he expects the decision on whether he plays in Thursday night’s big matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs to come just before the game, according to Eric D. Williams of ESPN.

“I've been grinding hard to get back and we're still trying to decide what we're going to do,” Gordon said Tuesday. “I know Coach [Anthony Lynn] is trying to be careful and doesn't want me to further hurt myself or things like that. So we'll see where that goes, but I'm a lot stronger and more confident than I was last week.”

Gordon has missed the Chargers’ last two games due to a sprained right knee. He was a limited participant in Tuesday’s practice, but his status for Thursday remains up in the air.

Austin Ekeler, Gordon’s backup, suffered a bruised nerve in his neck as well as a concussion in the Chargers’ win over the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday and is unlikely to play Thursday.

If Gordon and Ekeler can't play, rookie running back Justin Jackson would get his first career start. Jackson played well in Weeks 12 and 13, rushing for 120 yards on just 15 carries with a touchdown. However, he was kept in check against the Bengals as he had just 12 yards on seven carries.

The Chargers still have a shot at overtaking the Chiefs for the AFC West lead. Gordon’s presence would give them a better shot at overcoming Kansas City. But with the playoffs nearing, the Chargers will also be wise to be more cautious with their star running back and not rush him back if he’s not ready.
