Melvin Gordon is a fifth-year NFL veteran heading into the final season of his rookie contract. Before signing any extensions with the San Diego Chargers, Gordon would like to see how the rest of the market shakes out.

This offseason Leveon Bell, David Johnson, Todd Gurley, Alvin Kamara, and even Ezekial Elliot are either up for an extension or free agency. The entire market may be redefined if Bell makes a ton of money.

Gordon wants to make sure he makes the maximum amount of money if he would resign with the team for the long term.

Melvin Gordon told the Orange County Register:

“I’m waiting. I’m sitting back waiting, waiting on Bell. I’m glad it’s changing because we [running backs] were getting devalued for a little bit. But me, David Johnson, Todd Gurley, I can go down a whole list, Bell, you name it, ‘Zeke,’ just game-changers, Alvin Kamara, all those guys.”

This past season Leveon Bell sat out the season. He refused to be franchise tagged by the Pittsburgh Steelers and simply would not play with them.

He waited out a whole season to finally become a free agent. His contract is expected to blow the running back market wide open.

Last season Gordon ran for 885 yards with 10 rushing touchdowns. He also had 50 receptions for 490 yards and four receiving touchdowns. This production was done through only 12 games, making his production quite remarkable.

The Chargers went 12-4 last year and finished 2nd in the AFC West Division to the Los Angeles Rams.

They ended up losing to the New England Patriots in a divisional round matchup in the playoffs.
