The Los Angeles Chargers seem content with bringing back wide receiver Mike Williams for a fifth-year, as the option on his contract was reportedly picked up, per Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated.

Williams is coming off a campaign in 2019 that saw him lead the NFL in yards per reception (20.1), having amassed 1,001 receiving yards while hauling in just 49 catches. He saw a career-high 90 targets, but was able to find the endzone just twice, on the heels of a 10-touchdown breakout back in '18.

But what has Los Angeles optimistic moving forward is the increased role that the former No. 7 overall pick has taken on since his arrival. After a quiet rookie season in 2017, Williams has taken over the No. 2 receiver role on the Chargers with aplomb, teaming up with Keenan Allen, making for a lethal combination to cover.

Los Angeles had to make the call on Williams' fifth-year option this off-season and there was no reason to believe that the organization would allow him to become a free agent a year earlier than anticipated. He will become an integral part of the team's offense in 2020, it's first year sans franchise figurehead Philip Rivers, who departed to join Indianapolis in free agency.

The expectation has been that Tyrod Taylor would take over starting signal caller duties for the Chargers, although the selection of rookie quarterback Justin Herbert could throw a wrench into those plans.

If Williams can develop a rapport with either quarterback on a consistent basis, he could be looking at a long-term landing spot.
