The Los Angeles Chargers will be without wide receiver Mike Williams on Thursday night against the Las Vegas Raiders.

Adam Schefter of ESPN reported Williams is dealing with a back injury, and is not expected to play. Pro Bowl wideout Keenan Allen might also miss the contest for the Chargers with a hamstring issue.

Williams has had an up-and-down kind of season in 2020. The former No. 7 overall pick was practically invisible through the first three weeks. Williams had four receptions for 69 yards in Week 1, but followed with a combined three receptions for just 31 yards over the next two weeks.

Though Williams had five catches for 109 yards and two scores in a Week 5 loss to the New Orleans Saints, he subsequently had one catch for four yards in a win over the Jacksonville Jaguars the following week. It has been a somewhat similar pattern ever since.

Williams' inconsistency reflects that of the Chargers.

Los Angeles has already been eliminated from playoff contention. The Chargers have dealt with a number of key injuries, especially on the defensive side of the ball, and multiple blown leads have cost them vital chances to win games.

But the most concerning developments have come on the offensive end.

Rookie quarterback Justin Herbert helped lead one of the more high-powered offenses in football through the first nine weeks. Things have been more of a struggle since, as the Chargers have surpassed 250 yards of total offense just twice in the last five games while failing to record more than 300 yards of total offense on two separate occasions.

Herbert and the Chargers offense could be in for a challenge once again Thursday with both Williams and Allen possibly sidelined.
