The Los Angeles Chargers were painfully close to a playoff berth this past season. Losing it at the last second hurt but they should be enthused with how close they can be with the right moves this offseason.

While the Chargers' offense is in great shape with Justin Herbert, their defense needs a lot of work. The unit has a few stars but is otherwise not very good. According to NFL Network's Mike Garafolo, the Chargers could be a suitor for two of the best free-agent cornerbacks: Stephon Gilmore and JC Jackson.

Gilmore seems like a top cornerback that could be very available. The Carolina Panthers he spent most of last season with are going nowhere. The Chargers are an up-and-coming squad who could greatly use the 31-year-old's services.

Jackson, who was a key player on the playoff-bound New England Patriots, might be in a situation that is too favorable to leave. The Pats' defense was one of the best units last season and Jackson led the NFL in defended passes, which should earn him a big contract. Prying the 26-year-old away may prove to be very tough.

Adding one of those names to a secondary that features Derwin James and a defense that features Joey Bosa would give Los Angeles a great defensive core. With rookie cornerback Asante Samuel Jr. showing potential, the Chargers could have a very good CB duo.

The Chargers being fortunate enough to land one of them wouldn't be the end of the work they have to do, though. Their defensive line needs serious help. Adding one of the league's better shutdown corners would be a great way to help it, though.
