The Los Angeles Chargers have once again been busy this offseason taking a close look at quarterbacks in this draft class who could potentially succeed Philip Rivers. They've already met with or workout out the “big four” quarterback prospects in Sam Darnold, Josh Rosen, Josh Allen, and Baker Mayfield, as well as Lamar Jackson.

But while they are unlikely to get one of those top prospects in the class when they pick at No. 17, they may instead have their sights set on picking one in Round 2, according to Daniel Jeremiah of NFL.com.

The Chargers have been doing their homework on this quarterback class and there is a lot of chatter about them potentially looking for Philip Rivers' eventual replacement. While many have pointed to the possibility of taking Louisville's Lamar Jackson in the first round, I'd keep an eye on guys like Washington State's Luke Falk, Oklahoma State's Mason Rudolph and Richmond's Kyle Lauletta in the second round.

Even though Rivers is an iron man who hasn’t missed a single game in 12 years, he’s still 36 years old and likely doesn’t have too many years left in the tank. It's only smart for the Chargers to consider all their options and be prepared for whatever situation just in case something happens to Rivers.

With Geno Smith and Cardale Jones currently backing up Rivers, they could afford to bring in another QB who could eventually develop into Rivers’ long-term replacement. It’s never too early to start thinking about that succession plan, and if they believe Falk, Rudolph, Lauletta, or some other QB is capable of developing into a star, they should go for it.
