Antonio Gates might be getting his wish after all with a return reunion with the Los Angeles Chargers. According to Josina Anderson of ESPN, a team source told her that they want the long-time Chargers tight end back on the team and they are hoping to get a deal done before training camp starts.

The Chargers report to training camp on Friday which doesn't leave that much time to get the deal done. When Hunter Henry went down with an ACL injury earlier this offseason there was a buzz about Gates rejoining the team. It didn't gain much traction until last week with the talk that Gates rejoining the team was a distinct possibility.

Chargers general manager Tom Telesco said there was still a chance that the best tight end in team history could come back for another year.

“There's no update right now,” Telesco said via ESPN. “We'll see where things go next week. We've got a couple, different possibilities. We had talked about one obviously with Antonio Gates, and we'll see where that goes. We've got some time here next week, so we'll see what happens.

“Losing Hunter was a blow at the time, it is now but you have to overcome it. That's what you have to do.”

Gates has lost a step the last few years but would still be a valuable piece for the Chargers, especially as a red zone target. Gates has always been a favorite target of quarterback Phillip Rivers and he would look for him again this year in the end zone if he is brought on board.
