There was some doubt earlier in the week that Mike Williams would suit up for the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 2. Despite his injury, Philip Rivers was able to heave it to Williams on a huge gain versus the Detroit Lions.

On the play, Williams was running a route down the sideline between two defenders. While he was covered pretty well, Rivers still unloaded the ball downfield and Williams made a magnificent catch as he kept his feet in bounds.

Upon watching the play closely, you can see that Lions safety Quandre Diggs thought he had an easy interception. Instead, the third-year wide receiver dove in front of Diggs to make it a 47-yard gain.

Luckily for the Chargers, it wasn't intercepted, due to Los Angeles getting a field goal out of it before halftime. Anthony Lynn and company went into the locker room with a 10-6 lead at the end of the second quarter.

The Chargers are hoping to see more play like this from their young receiver as he becomes a vital piece of their offense. With Tyrell Williams departing in free agency, that opened the door for the Clemson product to see a more prominent role.

Last year, Williams was able to haul in 43 receptions for 664 yards and 10 touchdowns. Impressively, Williams led the team in touchdown catches—even with Keenan Allen and Tyrell in the offense.

Now, the 6-foot-4 receiver will continue to develop as the second-best receiving option behind Allen.

One way to build trust with Rivers is to make a play like he did today.
