The Kansas City Chiefs exercised the fifth-year option of star quarterback Patrick Mahomes on Thursday, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapaport.

Outside of the terms of Mahomes' rookie deal, the Chiefs are expected to offer the former NFL MVP and Super Bowl LIV MVP gunslinger a massive contract extension in the near future. The 24-year-old Texas native has broken unto the scene the arguably the best signal-caller in the game in three short years. Kansas City initially selected Mahomes with the 10th overall pick in the 2017 draft, grooming him behind veteran Alex Smith. After Smith was dealt to the Washington Redskins, it cleared room for start Mahomes under center, leading to a league-best 50 touchdowns thrown in 2018 and an MVP and Offensive Player of the Year honors.

Mahomes and the Chiefs were stopped in the AFC title game in 2018-19 by the New England Patriots but advanced to the Super Bowl in Feb. 2020 after another successful regular-season campaign in 2019, ultimately trouncing the NFC champion San Francisco 49ers and their vaunted defense in a second-half comeback for the Vince Lombardi Trophy.

Since then the Chiefs have attempted to continue upgrading weapons around Mahomes in head coach Andy Reid's offense, including taking LSU Tigers running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire at the end of the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft last week. Kansas City also came away with TCU offensive tackle Lucas Niang in the third round to bolster their offensive line and protect the prized QB.

Picking up Mahomes' fifth-year option was an obvious move by the Chiefs, now begins the long-term negotiations to keep the star gunslinger in “Kansas” for a while.
