The Kansas City Chiefs are off to a blazing start out of the gate to the 2018 season sweeping through their first month of games behind their potent offense led by second-year quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

Former longtime starter Alex Smith has chimed in on the situation by stating that he isn't surprised by how Mahomes has played through the first few games of the season, according to John Keim of ESPN.

“Definitely not,” Smith said. “Physical tools aside, which he does have a unique tool set, it’s more the processing. He processes things really well and processes fast. He sees things quick. He learns fast; he’s not a guy you had to repeat things. He knew. He saw the game well. I never felt it was too fast for him, even last year.”

Mahomes has taken the league by storm through the first month of games this year with his play showing the ability to lead the offense with his arm in what has been mistake-free football as he has notched 14 touchdown passes to zero interceptions. In his first real test of the season, he answered the bell against the Denver Broncos on Monday night completing 28-of-45 passes for 304 yards with a touchdown that helped the Chiefs overcome a double-digit fourth-quarter deficit.

This has pushed him to an exclusive list through the first month of the season as he and Peyton Manning are the only players to notch at least 14 touchdown passes over that stretch. He has shown to have the complete package skill set with his strong accurate arm along with being elusive in the pockets even with it collapses while keeping his eyes down the field. Mahomes has also shown great decision-making while being posed under pressure.

It has brought more perspective toward that year sitting behind Smith that allowed him to get a strong grasp of the offense while learning from an established quarterback. All of this put the Chiefs in a promising position with a bright future ahead with Mahomes leading the way under center for the long haul.
