Kansas City Chiefs second-year quarterback Patrick Mahomes took the field for the first time as the clear-cut starter for the franchise in preseason action on Thursday night against the Houston Texans, but it didn't exactly go as planned.

Mahomes struggled a bit throwing the ball while not showing much in his brief time on the field that saw him only complete 5-of-7 passes for 33 yards that he didn't help lead the team to any scoring drives in brief time on the field. Despite that, head coach Andy Reid didn't voice any level of concern with the Texas Tech product's performance, according to Brooke Pryor of The Kansas City Star.

“Too many mistakes with this game, but that’s what the preseason is for,” coach Andy Reid said. “We’ll go back and work on those things. Clean up some things. Small things matter. And it’s good for these guys to learn that. We’ll get back on the horse in two days and get working on it.”

It was a game that didn't see him have a chance to truly make an impact as he played in just the first quarter of the contest. There wasn't a chance for him to gain a rhythm on the field, but he did avoid making any throwing mistakes and took care of the ball when he was under pressure.

Although the Chiefs are hoping that Mahomes is the long-term answer under center, he is still developing into a being a capable starting quarterback. He is entering his second year in the league with the starting job in front of him after just playing in one game in his rookie campaign. There is a tremendous level of expectations laid before him, and this brief outing in the preseason isn't indicative of what he can bring to the table.

If anything, this preseason action is some much-needed experience for him to get better prepared for the upcoming season where he will be relied upon heavily. In the meantime, this is a step toward getting more playing time under his belt ahead of the 2018 campaign.
