Well, it appears to be official now. Veteran pass rusher Justin Houston has been released by the Kansas City Chiefs.

With reports initially indicating that such a move would be occurring at some point this weekend, Chiefs head coach Andy Reid has since released an official statement regarding the matter.

“I’ve been fortunate to get to know Justin over the last six seasons, and not only is he a talented football player, but he’s a tremendous person,” Reid said on Sunday, via Adam Teicher of ESPN. “He really helped set the tone, and I appreciate the work he put in with us. I wish him the best as he continues his career.”

Even with Houston now out of the picture in Kansas City, the Chiefs' future remains as bright as ever. Thanks to the team's success from this past season, Reid recently commented on his team's approach going forward.

“Most of all, now they’ve got a taste,” Reid said, via NFL Network. “We’ve got a nice blend of young and old on our team—they got a taste of what it takes. So you could sit there as a coach and you tell them, ‘Listen, everything’s a little faster as you move up in the playoffs and games are a little bit more intense. You can get away with a little bit more here and there,’ but to experience it now, it’s a different deal.”

Of course, the eventual Super Bowl Champion New England Patriots were simply just too much to handle for the Chiefs come playoff time.
