The Kansas City Chiefs officially kickstarted the offseason by parting ways with their longtime franchise quarterback Alex Smith. They have since handed the reigns over to second-year quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

Mahomes is still relatively green when it comes to playing experience. However, head coach Andy Reid said during an appearance on the NFL Network that he has the intangibles of a future franchise quarterback:

“He's got a lot to prove, but he's wired the right way.”

Although Mahomes has done a tremendous job of earning the trust of the organization, Reid acknowledged that a lot of that had to do with learning behind Smith last season:

“He’s unbelievably easy to coach,” Reid said. “I’ve told our young guy (second-year quarterback) Patrick Mahomes that he could have bought Alex a castle, and that wasn’t enough to just be in that (quarterback) room with him.”

The Chiefs had made several notable trades this offseason in an effort to build for their long-term future. However, the expectations still could not be higher for Kansas City moving forward.

That said, Mahomes is expected not only maintain their winning standards but build on them as well with progression on offense. The verdict is still out on whether or not the Chiefs made the right decision by trading Smith. Mahomes completed 22-of-35 passes for 284 yards and an interception in his lone start during the 2017 NFL season. While it may not have been the most impressive debut, it should be noted that it was against a formidable Denver Broncos defense at the time.
