The Kansas City Chiefs are getting some much-needed help on the outside. According to ESPN's Rob Demovsky, free agent cornerback Bashaud Breeland is signing a one-year contract with the Chiefs.

The deal is loaded with incentives that could allow the five-year veteran to earn up to as much as $5 million next season, per NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

Breeland spent the 2018 season with the Green Bay Packers. He initially signed a three-year, $24 million contract with the Carolina Panthers in the opening days of free agency, but failed his physical due to an infection on his foot that was the result of a cut he suffered while vacationing in the Dominican Republic, leading the Panthers to void his contract.

The Chiefs would subsequently host Breeland for a July workout and visit with team executives upon his return to health last summer. He left Kansas City without a contract, though, beginning the season as a free agent before signing a one-year contract with the Packers on September 25.

Breeland played in seven games for Green Bay last season, starting five after debuting with the Packers on November 4. He injured his groin in a Week 11 loss to the Seattle Seahawks, prompting him to miss the next two games. The Clemson product finished the season with 20 tackles, two interceptions – one of which he returned for a touchdown – and four passes defensed.

The Chiefs, who lost in overtime to the eventual champion New England Patriots in the AFC Championship game, ranked second-to-last in points allowed last season.

Their defensive overhaul began in January when the team hired Steve Spagnuolo as its defensive coordinator, and has continued in free agency, marked most by the departures of Eric Berry, Justin Houston, and Dee Ford, plus the addition of Tyrann Mathieu.
