After being drafted by the Kansas City Chiefs with the 32nd pick, running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire was seemingly bound to be a back-up in his rookie campaign. The offensive rotation of the Super Bowl LIV champions remains to be one of the deepest in the league.

With the recent opt-out of veteran running back Damien Williams, an opportunity opened up for the rookie to be an immediate contributor in the upcoming season:

“He’s on pace to have a big year, to be our primary ballcarrier,” General manager Brett Veach said.

The 21-year old player was fresh off concluding a productive three-year run with the powerhouse LSU Tigers. He recorded a total of 1,414 rushing yards and 16 touchdowns on 215 carries in his 2019 campaign. His rushing yards tally also set the record for the third-most in a single season in school history.

He eventually earned a consensus first-team All-SEC selection and became the only SEC running back to be named a semi-finalist for the Doak Walker Award. The Louisiana native also played a crucial role in the Tigers' win that bagged the 2020 National Football Championship.

He will look to replicate his collegiate success in the pro ranks with the Chiefs in the upcoming season. Edwards-Helaire is the latest addition to the long list of offensive weapons that quarterback Patrick Mahomes will have in 2020. Tight end Travis Kelce along with wideouts Tyreek Hill, Sammy Watkins, and Mecole Hardman complete the supporting cast for the Chiefs.

The rookie will first see action on the field when his team hosts the Houston Texans for the opening game on September 10.
