The Kansas City Chiefs have had a tough time finding a running back who can handle a full workload and their backfield got even thinner on Thursday. According to Ian Rapoport, Darrel Williams was placed on injured reserve following his hamstring injury.

This past Sunday, Williams was forced to make an early exit against the Oakland Raiders due to the hamstring injury he suffered. Apparently, the injury is serious enough to end Williams' 2019 campaign.

Over the course of the year, Kansas City has used a mixture of running backs that includes the two Williams (Damien and Darrel). Along with those two, LeSean McCoy and even Darwin Thompson have gotten touches in the offense.

None of them have shown that they are deserving of being the full-time starter just yet.

Before the hamstring injury, the second-year running back was able to haul in a three-yard pass to help the Chiefs defeat the Raiders 40-9. Over the course of the season, Williams has rushed for 141 yards on 41 attempts and three touchdowns.

The undrafted running back out of LSU has also caught 15 passes for 167 yards and a score as a receiver. With Williams missing the rest of the season, the team has promoted defensive back Alex Brown from their practice squad.

In addition, Kansas City signed Spencer Ware earlier this week to bolster the running back position. Of course, Ware has been with the Chiefs before, spending 2015-28 with the organization.

Ahead of Sunday's game with the New England Patriots, it is unknown about who will start at running back. At this point, it's likely that Kansas City will take a “hot-hand” approach moving forward.
