The Kansas City Chiefs are going to be returning most of their starters next season, but will be making a change on special teams. According to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero, Dustin Colquitt was released by Kansas City on Tuesday morning.

Prior to being released, Colquitt spent 15 seasons with the Chiefs, becoming one of the most consistent punters in the NFL. Just this past season, Colquitt was part of Kansas City's Super Bowl roster.

Colquitt began his career with the Chiefs as a third-round pick in the 2005 NFL Draft. Seeing that he was taken in the third round as a punter, Kansas City had some high expectations for Colquitt. It's safe to say that the Tennessee product exceeded those expectations in his remarkable career.

Throughout his 15 seasons in the NFL, Colquitt has been selected to two Pro Bowls with the Chiefs. In addition, he's averaged 44.8 yards per punt, which is good enough for 25th in NFL history.

While he's usually been a vital piece on Kansas City's roster, Colquitt hasn't had the same role over the last two seasons due to Kansas City's high-powered offense. As a matter of fact, he's combined for only 93 punt attempts in the last two seasons. That is three fewer punts than his career-high of 96 punts in the 2009 season.

Following Kansas City's Super Bowl victory, the team is doing everything they can to create some cap space for the future. By releasing Colquitt, the Chiefs are going to save $2 million in cap space. At the same time, Kansas City is going to have some big punter shoes to fill in the 2020 season.
