Throughout the last several weeks, the Kansas City Chiefs have been treading lightly with star safety Eric Berry, who has been dealing with a heel injury that arose in training camp.

This has already put him out of action for the season opener and he appears to be headed toward the same designation as the Chiefs have listed him as doubtful for Sunday's game on the road against the Pittsburgh Steelers, according to James Palmer of The NFL Network.

Beyond dealing with a torn Achilles tendon that cut his 2017 campaign in last year's season opener against the New England Patriots. The Chiefs are looking to handle this situation properly in order for him to not suffer any other associated injury. If he comes back sooner than necessary, it could lead to another part of his body compensating for the injury and lead to a setback occurring forcing him to miss more action.

Kansas City is hoping that Berry can step into a critical role in the secondary once he returns at some point this year. He has shown when he is healthy to be one of the league's best defensive backs. However, he has been hampered by several different health issues that have limited his availability on the field in his career. There is much confidence in Berry as he has shown in each situation that he can recapture his elite level of play that has seen him earn five Pro Bowl nods, three First-Team All-Pro selections, and an NFL Comeback Player of the Year award.

There is some encouraging news that Berry has continued to make progress with the injury, but isn't ready to make his return to the field at this point in time. The Chiefs have another tough assignment defensively in Week 2 facing a potent offense in the Pittsburgh Steelers that should test their secondary.

With the absence of one of their best defensive players going up against one of the best offensive teams in the NFL, Kansas City are currently underdogs against the Steelers, according to BetOnline.ag.
