The Kansas City Chiefs have acquired safety John Lucas on Friday via a trade with the Miami Dolphins, Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network has reported. The Chiefs only had to give up a seventh-round pick to obtain the services of the former sixth-round pick in the 2016 NFL Draft.

Lucas spent his first three seasons in the NFL with the Dolphins and appeared mostly with the special teams in 2017. This move is also part of Kansas City’s plan to shore up its secondary and probably to replace Robert Golden, who parted ways with the team earlier this August.

Safety depth is currently a problem for Chiefs general manager Brett Veach. Apart from the departure of Golden, the Chiefs are also dealing with the health struggles of Daniel Sorensen and Eric Berry.

Bolstering the secondary is one of the principal goals of Kansas City his offseason, as the team is coming off a 2017 season in which the Chiefs finished 29th in passing yards allowed and 28th in total defense.

When the Chiefs traded quarterback Alex Smith to the Washington Redskins, they addressed some of their needs in the secondary by getting cornerback Kendall Fuller in return, though, it’s going to take more than that for Kansas City to cover all bases downfield defensively.

The Chiefs are in the same division that features gunslingers in the likes of Derek Carr, Phillip Rivers, so hopefully, for Kansas City, the addition of Jordan Lucas will help them reduce the production of opposing quarterbacks.

Lucas made quite an impression in his last game in a Dolphins uniform, as he recorded an interception during Thursday’s 34-7 preseason final win over the Atlanta Falcons.
