Training camp can be an odd time for NFL athletes. Take Kansas City Chiefs cornerback Tremon Smith for example, who appears to be making the switch from defense to offense, specifically running back.

A sixth-round pick in 2018, Smith was asked by head coach Andy Reid if he'd like to switch to offense, according to The Kansas City Star‘s Sam McDowell:

“Hope you’ve been working on your offensive side,” Reid said, as Smith recalled.

“Of course, coach,” Smith replied. “Always.”

Reid then told reporters that he's been contemplating the move for some time now. The coach said, according to McDowell,

“I messed with him last year that I was gonna play him a little on the offensive side, so I moved him over today just to take a peek at him. We’ll see how that goes. We know he can be a corner. But I’d like to see him do some offensive stuff, too.”

Smith is excited for the fresh start at his new position. Who wouldn't be when they are playing with one of the NFL's most potent offenses ever?

“I’m excited. You gotta be excited catching the ball from the MVP.”

Switching from No. 39 to No. 20 and donning red jersey, Smith's move to running back is official. His teammates can't believe it, as he told reporters via McDowell,

“They couldn’t believe it. They see me with the red jersey on, and they’re like, ‘Are you doing this for scout team today?’ I’m like, ’No, this is a permanent move. Get used to it.”

The Chiefs currently have Damien Williams, Carlos Hyde, Darwin Thompson, and Darrel Williams ahead of him on the depth chart. But Smith brings a new, valuable element to the Chiefs' offense; speed.

He has a 4.3-second 40-yard-dash time to his name, and that helped him average 23 yards per kick return on his six attempts as a rookie.
