The Kansas City Chiefs had kickstarted the NFL offseason with a number of splash moves. As a result, this new Chiefs team will feature a much more youthful look moving forward.

Not surprisingly, they will need to build through the draft in the coming years if they are to maintain their playoff expectations. According to Terez Paylor of the Kansas City Star, general manager Brett Veach indicated that most of their picks will go to fortifying the defensive side of the ball:

“I don’t think as an evaluator, as a personnel member, you’re ever happy with your team unless you win a Super Bowl,” Veach said, “so we’re going to look to improve the defense. We’re going to look to make changes.”

Veach's comments should come as no surprise. Kansas City made some tough decisions this offseason which started with the trade that sent quarterback Alex Smith in return. However, the move was indicative of the confidence they have in quarterback Patrick Mahomes moving forward.

Although the Chiefs managed to gain a promising cornerback in Kendall Fuller, he hardly replaces all that the team lost on defense. Of course, this starts with the departure of cornerback Marcus Peters to the Los Angeles Rams. They also parted ways with five-time Pro Bowl linebacker Tamba Hali as well this offseason.

In response, they have signed linebacker Anthony Hitchens and nose tackle Xavier Williams. Kansas City also managed to add some more depth to the secondary with cornerback David Amerson. However, if Veach plans on bringing in quality talent through the draft he may need to consider moving some assets that way they can move up. As of right now, their first pick is a late second-rounder.
