Every quarterback in the NFL has that one loss that they simply never get over. While quarterback Patrick Mahomes has already had multiple arduous defeats over his run with the Kansas City Chiefs so far, the 2022 AFC Championship Game loss to the Cincinnati Bengals may just be that game for the fifth-year passer.

Speaking to ESPN's Lisa Salters during the 2022 Pro Bowl, Mahomes opened up about the home playoff loss to the Bengals last week, where he noted he plans on using the defeat as fuel heading into the 2022 campaign.

“I’m still not over it,” Mahomes said. “I don’t think I’ll be over it until we’re playing in another Super Bowl. I’ll have to use that as motivation going forward.”

The Chiefs had quite a roller-coaster showing in the AFC title game clash against the Bengals. While it seemed as if the Chiefs were going to cruise to a blowout win after they built a 21-3 lead in the first half, they collapsed in the end. Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow had the last laugh, as he anchored the game-winning drive in the overtime period that sent Cincinnati to Super Bowl 56.

Mahomes noted after the defeat to the Bengals that simply playing in the AFC title game is not the “standard” for the Chiefs. The reigning AFC West champions did turn around their campaign following the 3-4 start to the year, but in the end, they fell short of meeting the expectations that many had on them heading into the season.

Overall, Mahomes had a standout season for Kansas City in the 2021 campaign, as he combined for 48 passing touchdowns in 20 total games played, including the playoffs.
