For years now, opposing defenses have simply had a difficult time in containing the duo of Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes and tight end Travis Kelce.

The two once again had a standout performance in a pivotal playoff game, as they led the way in the Chiefs’ dramatic AFC divisional round win over the Buffalo Bills. The one-time NFL MVP winner targeted Kelce nine times in the contest, and the veteran tight end hauled in eight receptions for 96 receiving yards and the game-winning touchdown in overtime.

For Mahomes, the keen chemistry that he has had with not only Kelce but also with Tyreek Hill has simply come down to the continued familiarity he has had with them for years now, which he elaborated on during a press conference ahead of the Chiefs’ AFC Championship game matchup against the Cincinnati Bengals.

“It just takes a lot of reps,” Mahomes said. “Just going out there and seeing a lot of different coverages, the good thing about being in this offense with the guys that we have is we’ve seen possibly every coverage you could see. Guys have seen those; they recognize those on the field, and they know how to get themselves open within the system of the offense.

“You have to not only know what you have but know what everybody else in the entire offense has. That just comes with guys that know the offense and run it the right way.”

Yet another test awaits both Mahomes and Kelce, as the Chiefs will meet the Bengals on Sunday for a spot in the Super Bowl. They may have to produce another historic performance together in order to clinch a trip to the Super Bowl for the third straight season.
