The Kansas City Chiefs took Clyde Edwards-Helaire with the final pick in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft. However, it's Kansas City's other running back drawing rave reviews from the Chiefs running back coach.
Deland McCullough, the RBs coach for the Chiefs, expects big things from Damien Williams in 2020:
“When he shined, he shined at a level that helped us get over a hump in a few games — and obviously helped us in winning the Super Bowl,” McCullough said, via Nate Taylor of TheAthletic.com. “Just listening to the way Damien spoke about himself and the things we’re doing and the things he’s going to do to improve, I think his maturation in this offense is going to be a big jump this year.”
During the regular season last year, Williams dealt with injuries that would sideline him for five games. With that being said, Williams would rush for a team-high 498 yards and five touchdowns. But it was his efforts in the playoffs that helped Kansas City prevail in the Super Bowl.
In Kansas City's first two postseason contests, Williams contributed 157 scrimmage yards and three touchdowns. Then, in the Super Bowl versus the daunting defense of the San Francisco 49ers, Williams would produce 133 yards from scrimmage and two touchdowns.
There's no doubt that the Chiefs have lofty expectations for Edwards-Helaire, comparing him to the likes of Brian Westbrook. However, while Edwards-Helaire figures to have an immediate role in the offense, Kansas City wants people to know they are also confident in Williams next season.
