The Kansas City Chiefs were dealt a massive blow early in their playoff game against the Buffalo Bills on Sunday afternoon after Tyrann Mathieu ended up in the concussion protocol.

According to Adam Teicher of ESPN, Mathieu is done for the game due to the concussion protocol. He sustained the injury in the opening drive of the game when he took a knee from teammate Jarran Reed.

The Pro Bowl safety walked off the field and spoke with head coach Andy Reid. He was later evaluated in the injury tent and eventually sent to the locker room for further testing.

Tyrann Mathieu's absence is undoubtedly a huge issue for the Chiefs, who saw the Bills match up with them offensively in the first half of the contest and tie them at 14-14. Without their star safety, Kansas City had to rely on backup Daniel Sorensen alongside starter Juan Thornhill.

Mathieu had a brilliant 2021 season with the Chiefs, highlighted by his three interceptions, six passes defended, three fumbles recovered and 76 combined tackles. He also had one touchdown on the campaign, which came in Week 2 against the Baltimore Ravens.

The Chiefs are a deep team led by a brilliant quarterback in Patrick Mahomes. They have also been in the postseason numerous times and have competed at the highest level, so they certainly know what to do to adjust. Still, the absence of Matthieu has got to sting.
