Four-time All-Pro cornerback Darrelle Revis is back in the NFL after signing a contract with the Kansas City Chiefs, the team announced Wednesday. This is the fourth team Revis will have played for after two stints with the New York Jets as well as short tenures with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and New England Patriots.

There weren't any recent rumors circulating about teams having interest in signing Revis, so this comes as a surprise the day before Thanksgiving. After a sub-standard campaign in 2016, the Jets cut the seven-time Pro Bowler this offseason.

According to the NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, Revis' deal with the Chiefs is for two years, with the minimum this year and “no fully guaranteed money” in 2018. He still had $6 million left guaranteed from his old contract with the Jets, which will now be slightly reduced by his new deal with Kansas City.

UPDATE: can make above the minimumRevis this year due to incentives; in 2018 he is owed $10 million, but the team can cut him before next season so that the money doesn't become guaranteed.

Revis should adjust fairly easily to the Chiefs' defensive scheme. From the NFL Network's Tom Pelissero:

Bob Sutton told me years ago he lifted a lot from Rex Ryan's scheme to build his own with the Chiefs. Won't be much of a learning curve for Darrelle Revis.

Head coach Andy Reid talked about what the addition of Revis means for Kansas City's defense and the team overall moving forward.

“We’re excited to add Darrelle to the roster,” Chiefs Head Coach Andy Reid said. “He has experience and familiarity with Bob Sutton’s defense, he’s a team guy and we feel like a player of his caliber can help our football team.”

The Chiefs can surely use held in the secondary, which hasn't performed at a high clip in the absence of safety Eric Berry. Heading into Week 12, Kansas City is ranked 28th in passing defense. If they face the Pittsburgh Steelers or the Patriots in the playoffs, that will be a serious problem.

In Revis' Hall of Fame career, he has compiled 29 interceptions, six forced fumbles, 12 fumble recoveries, 485 tackles, three pick sixes, and a Super Bowl ring with New England.
