The Kansas City Chiefs have identified safety Tyrann Mathieu as an integral cornerstone of their franchise moving forward. As per Pro Football Talk, Chiefs general manager Brett Veach already claimed that they want to keep Mathieu “for the years to come” and agreeing to an extension with him is part of their plans for the offseason.

He first came to the Chiefs back in 2019 after concluding a one-year stint with the Houston Texans. Mathieu was immediately signed to a three-year, $42 million contract and the two sides have hit it off since then.

In his brief stay with the Chiefs thus far, the former LSU standout has already garnered two First-team All-Pro selections along with a Pro Bowl appearance in 2020. From a team's standpoint, Mathieu also served as a critical piece as he led the Chiefs' defense to put the clamps on the San Francisco 49ers to emerge victorious on a 31-20 win in Super Bowl LIV.

The 28-year-old concluded the 2020 season with total tallies of 62 total tackles and six interceptions through 15 games played. Unfortunately, his Chiefs squad failed to vie for a two-peat crown as they succumbed to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on a 31-9 defeat.

Mathieu is heading to the final season of his initial three-year deal and is set to earn a base salary of $14 million in 2021. After seeing how the past two years have transpired, the Chiefs would definitely want to have more runs with Tyrann Mathieu moving forward.

General manager Brett Veach is hoping that the move will help the Chiefs get back to the Super Bowl stage and contend for a title once again in the near future.
