The Kansas City Chiefs brought aboard veteran wide receiver Kelvin Benjamin for the rest of the season shortly after he released by the Buffalo Bills.

In his first official comments since the move, Benjamin was unable to put into words why he struggled to produce this year with the Bills, via Charean Williams of Pro Football Talk.

“I mean, I mean, I just. . . .,” Benjamin said Friday, via video from Brooke Pryor of the Kansas City Star. “There’s a lot of variables I guess. It’s just one of those seasons. It’s a rebuild-type year I guess.”

Things had quickly fallen apart in his first full year with the Bills as there initially had been the hope that the could Benjamin could be their clear-cut No.1 receiving option in the passing game, but that proved to be a struggle for him to fulfill each week. This was the case at times with the Bills this year, as he piled up 23 catches on 62 targets for 354 receiving yards and a touchdown.

The Bills have struggled to find any level of consistency this year offensive currently ranking 31st overall, in passing, and with 14.8 points per contest. This included them failing to register double-digit scoring while notching more than 25 points only twice. It has been a clear sign of a rebuild for the franchise after electing to roll with rookie quarterback Josh Allen as the starting quarterback.

Benjamin now has a chance to put that completely behind him with the Chiefs as he could quickly become an integral piece to the puzzle in the passing game. He has the opportunity to step into Samm Watkins' role in the passing game to work alongside Pro Bowlers Tyreek Hill and Travis Kelce. Benjamin will also get to work with a rising star in the league in second-year quarterback Patrick Mahomes. This may all line up for him to be the ideal situation for him to get his career back on track.
