The Kansas City Chiefs are set to sign former Arizona Cardinals running back Kerwynn Williams on a one-year deal, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports.

Former #AZCardinals RB Kerwynn Williams is signing a 1-year deal with the #Chiefs, source said. He had multiple options, but liked the fresh start KC represented.

Williams, 26, was a former seventh-round pick by the Indianapolis Colts in 2013 and has spent the past four years with the Cardinals. He played 37 games with Arizona, compiling 971 rushing yards on 218 carries with four rushing touchdowns.

Williams is coming off a career year in 2017 as he played all 16 games with six starts due to injuries to David Johnson and Adrian Peterson. He put up 426 rushing yards and a touchdown. He also added 10 catches for 93 receiving yards.

Williams visited Kansas City earlier this month. He will now join a crowded Chiefs running back depth chart which already features Kareem Hunt, Akeem Hunt, Spencer Ware, Charcandrick West, and Damien Williams, whom they signed earlier this offseason.

There don’t appear to be too many carries up for grabs among all those other Chiefs running backs not named Kareem Hunt. Hunt dominated the workload in the ground game last season with 272 carries en route to a league-leading 1,327 rushing yards and eight rushing touchdowns.

With Spencer Ware missing the entire season with a torn PCL last year, Charcandrick West was the second-leading running back with a mere 18 carries and 72 yards. With Ware's status upon his return still uncertain, Kerwynn Williams and the remainder of the Chiefs' running backs will have to pick up the scraps to keep Hunt relatively fresh.
