After missing most of the 2020 season due to a back injury, Kanas City Chiefs right tackle Mitchell Schwartz is set to undergo surgery on Wednesday.

Schwartz, who hasn’t played since leaving the Chiefs’ Week 6 game against the Buffalo Bills back in October, made the announcement on social media and posted a picture before the procedure.

He revealed that even after being sidelined with the injury, he still hoped to be able to return for Kansas City’s run to the Super Bowl, but didn’t recover in time. The 31-year-old added that the recovery process for the injury will not take long, and he expects to recover in time for the 2021 season.

Schwartz was an important part of the Chiefs’ run to the title in 2019 and was a durable player before missing 13 straight games due to injury. According to Sports Illustrated, the right tackle had started every game in his football career – from high school to college to the NFL.

The California product is a one-time First-Team All-Pro selection and a three-time Second-Team All-Pro member. His return will help address one of Kansas City’s biggest needs in the offseason, which was made apparent in Super Bowl 55. With Schwartz and Eric Fisher missing the game due to injury, the Chiefs started two backup offensive tackles against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The result was quarterback Patrick Mahomes facing constant pressure from the Buccaneers defense and not having enough time to throw the football and find his receivers, leading to a sub-par game. A healthy Schwartz helps address one of the Chiefs' biggest needs and gives Mahomes more protection in the 2021 season.
