Texas Tech basketball is headed to the national championship game for the first time in program history. On Monday night, they'll take on the Virginia Cavaliers for the title. To get there, they dispatched with Michigan State in the semifinals. Texas Tech alumni Patrick Mahomes was captured by cameras attending the game, but it turns out he did a little more than that.

The Kansas City Chiefs quarterback and reigning NFL MVP apparently gave the Red Raiders a pep talk before their game against the Spartans, according to Courtney Cronin of ESPN.com.

“‘It was awesome. He's a great guy,' said guard Jarrett Culver, who spotted Mahomes sitting near his parents and brothers. ‘He supports his school. We all love to have Pat around, so when he comes out, it's unbelievable,'” Cronin wrote.

Mahomes apparently addressed the team early on Saturday after a film session.

“He was excited. You could see his blood rushing, veins popping. He was turnt. Travis Kelce was there as well. It was a blessing to have those guys come,” senior Norense Odiase said.

The main point of the Chiefs' star's speech was that “the Red Raiders thrive as underdogs, and getting a win over the Spartans would prove everyone who doubted them wrong,” Cronin describes.

Mahomes, of course, was Texas Tech's starting quarterback for most of three seasons from 2014-16. In his career as a Red Raider, he threw for over 11,000 yards and 93 touchdowns. When he took over the Chiefs' starting job last season, he also immediately took over as the leader of the team.

His speech to the basketball team is the latest example of what a great leader the 23-year-old can be, and whatever he said clearly worked.
