The Kanas City Chiefs made quite the transition under center this offseason when they parted ways with quarterback Alex Smith in favor of quarterback Patrick Mahomes. Unfortunately, Mahomes' first training camp as the starter has gotten off to a rough start.
Mahomes has made his fair share of mistakes in practice thus far. However, according to ESPN's Adam Teicher, he has now thrown seven interceptions in six sessions:
Of course, it is never wise to jump to conclusions in training camp. Still, the fact that he has thrown so many interceptions has to be somewhat bothersome for the coaching staff.
Head coach Andy Reid has sung Mahomes' praises throughout the offseason. However, he has also preached the importance of not overwhelming the young gunslinger with too many changes. That said, this could simply all be part of the process he was referring to.
Although Reid has been cautious with Mahomes's progression, he understands that the NFL is still a business. The Chiefs made the transition with the hope that he can help take them to the next level.
They backed it up by surrounding him with some serious firepower as well. Regardless of the nature of these turnovers, Mahomes will need to find a way to clean it up by the end of camp.
