The Kansas City Chiefs were optimistic that Patrick Mahomes could return in Week 9, but it appears as if he will need another week to recover. According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, Mahomes will miss his second straight game and Matt Moore will start versus the Minnesota Vikings.

Mahomes suffered a dislocated kneecap in Week 7 against the Denver Broncos and it forced him to miss last week's contest against the Green Bay Packers. Over the past two weeks, the gunslinging quarterback has been able to be a limited participant in practice.

Even though he's been able to make some progress, Mahomes will need at least another week to be ready to start under center. As a result, Moore will be given the nod as the starter for the second consecutive week.

In Week 8, Moore was able to complete 24 of his 36 attempts for 267 yards and two touchdowns. Due to his experience in Andy Reid's offense, Kansas City is comfortable with him filling in for Mahomes.

With Mahomes being sidelined, the Chiefs are four-point underdogs to the Vikings at home.

Along with Moore, the Chiefs recently promoted veteran Chad Henne to the active roster. Additionally, Kansas City waived Kyle Shurmur to create room for Henne.

When Mahomes was first injured, his original timetable to return was three to six weeks. Despite the initial timetable, it seems as if Mahomes is ahead of schedule and will return sooner than later.

On Sunday, Moore will start for the Chiefs, but expect to see Mahomes back in the offense in Week 10 against the Tennessee Titans.
