The Kansas City Chiefs were able to re-sign wide receiver Sammy Watkins on a one-year deal in free agency. It seems quarterback Patrick Mahomes has given his seal of approval.

Mahomes took to Twitter with a message for Watkins and Chiefs fans.

Watkins Secures Future With Chiefs

There had been plenty of speculation regarding Watkins' uncertain future heading into the offseason. Fortunately, both sides were able to come to an agreement on a one-year, $9 million this year. The deal could increase to $16 million after incentives.

Watkins has largely served as a complementary option in Kansas City's high-powered offense since his arrival. Injuries and the presence of wide receiver Tyreek Hill and tight end Travis Kelce have kept him from taking on an elevated role in the passing game. However, he is still more than capable of taking over when his number is called upon. He did finish the 2019 NFL season with 52 receptions for 673 yards and three touchdowns.

Mahomes' giddiness is certainly understandable since his arsenal of weapons will be at full strength once again heading into the 2020 NFL season. This recipe for success has helped him become the new face of the NFL. Mahomes has earned league MVP and Super Bowl MVP honors over the last two seasons. Keeping his supporting cast intact is an easy way to maintain high expectations year in and year out.

Meanwhile, Watkins will have another opportunity to put up some big numbers next season as part of the Chiefs offense. If he can stay healthy, he may be able to earn himself a lucrative, long-term contract.
