Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is following in the trend of star quarterbacks restructuring contracts to provide added salary cap flexibility.

Just hours after Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady agreed to a contract extension to improve the Bucs' cap situation, Adam Schefter of ESPN reported Mahomes is expected to agree to a contract restructure.

The move should save the Chiefs up to $17 million against the cap:

Kansas City is one of the teams with plenty of work to do to get well under the cap in order to make roster upgrades and sign draft picks.

The Chiefs had to resort to rather drastic measures Thursday. Kansas City cut both its starting offensive tackles in Mitchell Schwartz and Pro Bowl left tackle Eric Fisher.

Granted, Fisher was in the early stages of rehabbing a torn Achilles suffered in the AFC Championship Game against the Buffalo Bills. Schwartz had surgery to correct a back issue in February. Cutting both players saved the Chiefs $18 million in cap space.

Still, the move made headlines especially after Mahomes had been chased all over the field during Kansas City's Super Bowl loss to Brady and the Bucs.

Addressing the offensive line will surely be a priority for general manager Brett Veach. The Chiefs are now without both starting tackles from last season, and Mahomes is in a walking boot after undergoing surgery for a turf toe issue.

Mahomes will restructure to give Veach and Co. some added flexibility as they seek the means to protect their star quarterback.
