The Kansas City Chiefs came away with a pivotal 23-17 road win over the New England Patriots on Sunday, but they did not come out of it unscathed.

During the first half of the victory, quarterback Patrick Mahomes got up shaking his right hand after taking a hit, and his next pass did not exactly look great.

Mahomes never left the game, but he acknowledged that the hand was an issue throughout.

“It doesn’t feel great right now but it’s something that you play with,” Mahomes said, per Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk. “In this sport, you’re going to get hurt, you’re going to bang something. So for me, it’s about going out there and competing and relying on my teammates to help me out whenever I’m not feeling 100 percent.”

Mahomes completed 26 of his 40 passes for 283 yards, a touchdown and an interception, his latest so-so outing in what has been a rather up-and-down season for the third-year pro (by his standards).

Of course, this is hardly the first time Mahomes has dealt with an injury in 2019, as he suffered a dislocated knee cap back in Week 7 and missed a couple of games as a result.

He had an impressive return, throwing for 446 yards and three touchdowns in a Week 10 loss to the Tennessee Titans, but over the last three weeks, the 24-year-old has posted passer ratings of 72.7, 81.8 and 83.6, respectively.

The Chiefs won all of three of those games, but Mahomes' lackluster performance of late does bear noting moving forward.

Kansas City is now 9-4 and will take on the Denver Broncos next Sunday.
