The Kansas City Chiefs suffered a scare in the 2019 NFL season opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars when quarterback Patrick Mahomes was forced to leave the game early in the second quarter. Although his exit from the game was brief, the minor ankle injury seems to have had some lingering effects on his play after that.

Mahomes managed to come back and finish with a strong performance. According to Vahe Gregorian of The Kansas City Star, he admits he was not able to move around as much:

“Obviously, I wasn’t as mobile as I usually am, but the team helped me out,” said Mahomes. “I was able to get the ball out of my hands, and guys were making plays.”

It is safe to say that Chiefs fans were holding their breaths after seeing Mahomes ankle get caught up in a small scrum. Fortunately, he was able to bounce back and completed 25-of-33 passes for 378 yards and three touchdowns. More importantly, his team was able to get the season started on the right foot with a 40-26 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Kansas City will likely take a cautious approach with Mahomes activity in practice. Although he boasts one of the best arms in the NFL, his mobility certainly brings an added dynamic for defenses to worry about. It is far too early in the season for the reigning MVP to aggravate a minor ankle injury.

Mahomes receiving corps suffered a devastating blow with wide receiver Tyreek Hill expected to miss some time with a clavicle injury. Fortunately, wide receiver Sammy Watkins proved more than capable of stepping up as his top wideout in Hill's absence after a career day.
