The Kansas City Chiefs made a huge splash move to bolster their offense in free agency with the addition of wide receiver Sammy Watkins on a three-year, $48 million deal with $30 million guaranteed. It brings another proven talent into the mix to help continue to push the franchise in the right direction.

This also provides second-year quarterback Patrick Mahomes an additional threat in the passing game before he ventures into his first campaign as the starter with the Chiefs. According to Adam Teicher of ESPN, Watkins voiced that he believes that he and Mahomes can grow together on the field next season and beyond.

“I’m a young guy,’’ Watkins said. “I’m only 24-years-old. I just feel like me and him can get better together. We can grow together. All the guys we have on this team, we can grow. It’s a young team.

“I just know he’s a great player. He didn’t go in the first round for no reason.’’

Watkins is stepping into an opportunity where he could potentially be the top receiving option for Mahomes alongside Pro Bowler wide receiver Tyreek Hill and tight end Travis Kelce, who each finished with more than 1,000 receiving yards last season.

The 24-year-old is coming off one of the least productive campaigns in his brief NFL with 39 catches for 593 receiving yards and eight touchdowns in his lone year with the Los Angeles Rams.

The presence of other explosive talents on the field in Hill, Kelce and reigning Offensive Rookie of the Year Kareem Hunt could open many chances for him to make a big impact. He has demonstrated in his career that he can be a legitimate No.1 wide receiver in the passing game that could produce at a high level.

Given the type of deal that the Chiefs committed to Watkins shows that they believe he can fulfill a huge role in the offense. It may just be a matter of him stepping up into and showcasing why he deserved that lucrative contract.
