The Kansas City Chiefs managed to reward quarterback Patrick Mahomes with the richest contract in NFL history. Meanwhile, the same cannot be said for wide receiver Sammy Watkins after he opted to take a pay cut for the 2020 NFL season.

Watkins had his deal reworked this offseason that knocked off $4.75 million from his base salary. He recently explained his reasoning for doing it during an appearance on SiriusXM NFL Radio:

“How much money do I need? My family’s taken care of well. Do I want I go to a team and lose and get 1,000 yards with a team that’s sorry. Or do I want to come back with one of the best coaches, the best quarterbacks, the best organization, the best team, the best wideout group — arguably — and come try to fight for another championship.”

There is certainly plenty of truth to Watkins' comments. Although he may be parting ways with a solid chunk of change for now, he is happy with playing an integral role on a Super Bowl-caliber team like Kansas City. Of course, he will have an opportunity to make up for the lost salary through incentives.

Watkins has proven more than capable of taking over as Mahomes' most-trusted option in the passing game from time-to-time. The fact that he wass willing to sacrifice his salary in the hopes of building a potential dynasty with the Chiefs is indicative of his selflessness and the strong locker room culture that has been established by head coach Andy Reid.
